Technology I'm Exploring
- Airgapped Kubernetes - Delivering and operating Kubernetes where there's no path to the internet, so every image, chart, and dependency has to be mirrored across the gap and kept in sync
- Architecture and simplification - Spending more time on deliberate architecture up front, and on cutting code that got developed into an over-engineered mess (often AI-accelerated) back to the boring version the problem actually needs
- SPIFFE/SPIRE - Implementing zero-trust identity for service-to-service communication
- Vault Internals - Deep diving into secrets management and dynamic credentials
- Platform Engineering - Exploring developer experience and platform maturity models
Personal Projects
- Homelab on Talos / Hetzner - Migrated my homelab to a Talos-based Kubernetes cluster on Hetzner: immutable nodes, API-driven, no SSH
- Cluster automation - Cert-manager, ArgoCD, Hetzner CSI, the CloudNativePG operator and friends, all wired up so adding a new app is a Helm chart and a Git push
- Observability and SSO - Stood up a full observability platform on the cluster (Prometheus, Loki and Tempo behind Grafana), with Keycloak providing single sign-on for it and the other internal apps
- Pipelines, GitOps, and ergonomics - GitHub Actions for hosted CI, plus Make and Taskfile for the local pipelines that drive day-to-day work on the cluster and on this site
- Home Automation - Home Assistant with custom automations
Learning Goals
- Security Architecture - Deepening understanding of zero-trust principles and implementation in practice as well as how to move from legacy to modern security architectures
- Platform Maturity - Studying organizational models and platform team structures
- System Design - Exploring distributed systems patterns and trade-offs
- Technical Writing - Improving documentation and knowledge sharing practices
Personal Priorities
- Daily exercise - Walking, jogging, and cycling, moving every day, not just when there's time
- Reading - Focusing on technical books, blogs and system design literature
- Community - Contributing to open source and mentoring others
- Cooking - Playing around with new recipes and ingredients with my kids
